1. 金沢 / Kanazawa
This refined city, known as ‘Little Kyoto’, is one of the key cultural centers in Japan. It was spared destruction during WWII and several historical and cultural sites have therefore been preserved, including temples, samurai houses, a geisha district and Kenroku-en, one of Japan’s top three gardens.
2. 広島 / Hiroshima
Despite being the first city in the world to suffer the devastation of an atomic bomb, Hiroshima has transformed itself into a city of vitality and growth. Its two world heritage sites, the Atomic Dome and Miyajima, a beautiful island famous for its ‘floating torii(shrine gateway)’, are both true symbols of peace and not to be missed.
3. 庄内(山形県) / Shonai(Yamagata prefecture)
This is a nature-lover’s paradise and the place to come if you are into hiking and outdoor activities. There are many natural hot springs to unwind in, and for those interested in history, there are old temples and beautifully restored Edo and Meiji period villas to explore.
4. 日光、栃木 / Nikko & Tochigi
Nikko is located in beautiful national park containing the famous Nikko Shrine complex - a world heritage site, along with lakes, hot springs and waterfalls. This is the ideal place for anyone interested in exploring the natural beauty and history of Japan.
5. 神奈川 / Kanagawa
Kanagawa is a large prefecture just south of Tokyo and is famous for two very different areas: Hakone - a beautiful mountainous national park and the location of Mt. Fuji, and Yokohama - a thriving port city with a futuristic bayside urban complex and a very international atmosphere.
6. 静岡 / Shizuoka
Located on the coast, just south of Tokyo and next to Kanagawa, this area is famous for green tea and the arts. It is a good place to experience Japanese traditions such as tea-ceremony, ikebana and zazen (Zen meditation); and it is also a good place to view Mt. Fuji.
7. 愛知 / Aichi
Located in the center of the Japanese archipelago, Aichi is a good place to explore both old and new Japan. In the capital, Nagoya, one can see cutting edge technology at the futuristic Toyota Museum of Industry & Technology, and outside the city one can find castles and other historical sites amid beautiful nature.
8. 鹿児島 / Kagoshima
Located at the very southern tip of Japan, Kagoshima lies in the shadow of its famous (and still active) volcano Sakurajima. Kagoshima receives many tourists each year who come to view the volcano and to enjoy the many hot springs in the area, including the world’s only natural sand steam bath.
9. 千葉 / Chiba
Chiba is located just to the east of Tokyo and is home to many of Tokyo’s workers. It is most famous for being the location of Disneyland Tokyo, but it has a lot more to offer the tourist, especially on the east and south coasts where one can find beautiful temples, sleepy villages and spectacular coastline.
10. 東京(ホテル) / Tokyo(Hotel)
Tokyo is fast, bright and constantly buzzing with energy. There are many things to see here, from futuristic buildings to kabuki shows, but the atmosphere of the city is its biggest attraction.
11. 京都(ホテル) / Kyoto(Hotel)
The old capital of Japan, Kyoto has the largest concentration of temples and historical buildings in the country. It exudes an atmosphere of timely elegance and reveals a little of ‘Old Japan’.
